Portfolio Concept

Although I am still getting my bearings in web development, I aim to create creative clean-cut website designs, including both backend/frontend development and design. Beyond web development, my portfolio includes both academic and blog writing. Professionally, I am experienced in audio editing, blogging, photography, yoga instruction and foreign policy analysis.

Me

The Essentials

In the spring of 2015, I graduated with a degree in International Relations and German from Boston University. At present, I am interning with the International Criminal Court on the Investigations and Analysis Team, while I take a semester off from completing my Masters in Business Administration. It might seem strange to find someone with my background in coding or web development. However, there is a link that brings together all of these seemingly disparate things. Learning. Whether it's a new coding language, actual language, business or exciting political development - you can except to find me there.

My written work includes blogging, academic research and fictional writing. In addition, I am co-founder and creator of the podcast Brunch Break and blog Sub-Stances.

More About Me

Originally, I hail from Virginia, home of Thomas Jefferson. At the moment, I'm proud to call the Hague my home. I consider my home Berlin, Germany. Over the past year, I began my MBA at Touro College after finishing my time as a fellow of the Congress Bundestag Exchange for Young Professionals. Studying politics and business has its perks, but there's a certain degree of usefulness in learning web development skills that can't be ignored. I primarily study web development through Career Foundry. In my spare time, I also teach yoga and attempt to keep my German to a passable standard. Besides my main travel and cooking blog, I also write for Bad Yogi, a yoga and lifestyle website as a freelance writer. One of my primary projects that I dedicate time and effort towards is Sub-Stances. Sub-Stances is a blog and podcast company that aims to promote a stronger degree of cross-cultural understanding by promoting dialogue amongst our readers. I am open for freelance work, whether that be designing a new website background or getting into the details of back-end development.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I’ve always been somewhat of a constant learner and am never satisfied with the amount of knowledge at my fingertips. How we interact with the internet and see each of its parts (whether it’s frontend, backend or the full stack of features) is something that everyone should know… since we all use it. Learning about how the web works goes hand in hand in being a developer in my mind.
For any project, but particularly for web design, my "process" always starts on paper, where I can outline what exactly the client wants and then translate that to actual practical designs on Photoshop. Only then do I go for the actual building of the project itself. Long story short: I'm a planner.
Because I’m willing to work on a 100% satisfaction basis. If you aren't happy with my work, then I will continue to work at it until you are satisfied. Also: all work at this moment is free because I would like to build up a portfolio to the best of my ability.
This obviously depends on the project, but I like to aim for around 1 week for each project. This gives me time to conceptualise what it is I want to create and then go over bugs. Obviously this can vary, and is often times shorter than I imagine.
It's difficult to say. I haven't actually "switched" from one to the other. I continue to love International Relations as if I did it every day. I adore reading the news as much as I physically can stomach it. Researching random conflicts throughout the world and pondering on their importance is something I very much value. What do the ongoing issues in Abkhazia have to do with the global economy? Why is globalisation such a critical piece of what makes diplomacy possible? I think about these and other issues too often to be healthy. I never will leave International Relations, because in essence: it is learning, the practice of adapting to new circumstances in both policy and practice. My end goal is eventually to combine all of my web development skills and use them in a way that grows on what I feel competent on already. (The long answer to a very basic question)
I very much like to learn (is it obvious I like it?). That can manifest itself in a number of ways. I attempt to teach yoga on a weekly basis. On rainy days, I like to play Duolingo for German and Russian. I love to blog about books and recipes, and especially reading. If you're ever interested in what I'm reading, go ahead and check out my Goodreads - there is an eclectic mix, I assure you.
